How to Survive Moving Day
You've been planning for months ... but there is nothing you can do to stop the butterflies in your tummy when it comes time to actually load the interstate removalist truck and go! Here are some tips for surviving moving day with a minimum of fuss and stress.
Your survival kit
For several days before, gather all the things that you can't do without into a given area. On the day of the move, pack all of these things into a 'survival box'. This should include everyday items like snacks, changes of clothing, toiletries, travel documents, a first aid kit, etc. Pack your survival kit well in advance, to ensure that you don't remember something that you need is in the first box your interstate removalists loaded onto the truck!
Cleaning
Try to do as much cleaning as possible before moving day. Leave yourself a small amount of cleaning supplies to go over any odd spots that are dirtied during the move. You will probably need:
- Cleaning cloths
- Cleaning spray
- Bucket
- Detergent
- Handheld vacuum or carpet sweeper
Information
When planning and arranging your move, keep ALL of the relevant information and documents in one place. List your interstate removalist's phone number and that of your real estate agents, quote and booking numbers, etc in a folder or exercise book. Don't use scraps of paper for making notes about your move ... you'll inevitably need them on moving day!
Last minute tasks
Here is a selection of last minute tasks that most households need to perform:
- Turn off the power and water supply
- Turn off the water heater
- Tighten taps around the house
- Check your electricity and water meter readings for yourself
- Lock the house, including all doors, gates and windows
