Packing Your House for a Backloading Removal

Packing up every single thing that you own is a very strange feeling ... and it takes a VERY long time! If you have chosen to pack your own things, rather than have the furniture removalists pack for you, there are several techniques that you can use to ensure that everything arrives at your destination, intact and working.

Up to a month before moving day
Packing takes a lot longer than most of us expect. Get as much done as you can, as early as you can.
While you are packing, consider whether you have used an item in the last 12 months, and are likely to in the next 12 months. If neither of those apply, think about whether you could recycle it, donate it, or throw it away.

Pack an essentials box first
Before you pack up everything you own, pack your essentials box of things that you will need immediately when you arrive at your new house. This way the teddy bear your child can’t get to sleep without is guaranteed to be with you (not the furniture removalist) when you need it!

Carton types
Where possible, use re-useable plastic containers rather than cardboard boxes. This is more environmentally friendly, there is less chance of damage to the contents, and no possibility of the bottom falling out while they are being moved.

How to pack a carton

• Generally, put the largest things in the carton first and the smaller things into the spaces left over in order to fill cartons efficiently
• Fill spaces with balled-up newspaper to stop items sliding around
• Write a list of the contents of the carton before you tape the lid on

How to pack breakables and delicate items

• Put all breakables together in cartons marked 'Fragile - Handle With Care'
• In cartons containing breakables, line the bottom and spaces with screwed up paper
• Wrap all breakables in newspaper or butcher's paper
• Wrap every plate, every glass and either piece of crockery rather than wrapping in bundles
