Preparing Furniture and Appliances for a Backloading Removal

Making efficient use of the space in a furniture transport truck (and therefore giving you the cheapest moving quote!) greatly depends on proper preparation of your larger appliances and furniture items. Check our tips on prepping large items to help your moving day go smoothly, and ensure your furniture removals bill is as low as possible.

Appliances

  • Defrost, drain and dry your fridge and freezer, and completely drain and dry your washing machine, dishwasher, etc.
  • Remove any inner racks or shelves from appliances, or secure them so they don’t shift around and become damaged during moving.
  • Tape down any control knobs, especially on your stove
  • Tape down any gas lines to appliances
  • Roll the cord up and secure it to the back of the appliance with packing tape
  • Remember that you can pack linens, chair cushions, stuffed toys and bedding inside appliances once they are clean and dry, in order to save space.
  • Check the user manual for large appliances - there may be moving parts that need to be secured before the appliance can be safely moved.

Outdoor equipment

  • Make sure you drain all the fuel out of any petrol-driven power tools, lawnmowers and motorbikes that you are moving.
  • Dismantle any swing sets, trampolines, cubby houses or outdoor play equipment for the movers, otherwise you might incur additional fees or labour time.
  • Empty the gas bottles of barbeques. Ask your gas retailer for tips on doing this safely
  • Leave the key in your motorbike so that the handlebars can be moved. This makes it easier to steer it onto the furniture transport truck.

Furniture items

  • If your cupboards or drawers have unusually protruding handles, remove the handles for the furniture transport company.
  • Dismantle any flat pack furniture yourself.

When you get a quote for moving, let your furniture removalists know that you will have done all this work on the day - you will often get a discounted rate!
